Scope and Content Westside Mill, Denholm, Scottish Borders This shows the frontage of the building. The two rows of small windows lit the stocking frames. They face north so as to give a glare-free light. The door cut into the first floor, with its iron crane, is a later alteration, made when the building was used as a warehouse. In the late 19th century hand-operated stocking frames were replaced by power-operated machines, and this building became redundant. It was used as a warehouse for many years. In the 1980s it was converted into a dwelling house, with little alteration to its external appearance. This building was constructed, probably in the late 18th century, to house hand-operated stocking frames, used to make the flat knitted pieces which when made up produced the stockings worn both by men and by women at that time.
