Scope and Content Cotton thread mill, No 100 Duke Street, Glasgow later Great Eastern Hotel This shows the mill from the north-east. The top floor is a later addition. The new entrance of 1909 can be seen. The original building has a rusticated ground floor, and the three end bays at both ends are advanced, relieving the monotony of what is essentially a large plain block. The conversion to a working men's hotel involved subdividing the fireproof interior into cubicles, and providing catering facilities on the ground floor. The hotel closed in 2002, and awaits a new use. R F & J Alexander moved to Crofthead Mill, Neilston, and became part of the English Sewing Cotton Co Ltd. This mill was built in 1849 for R F & J Alexander, thread manufacturers, and designed by Charles Wilson, one of the leading Glasgow architects of the period. It was converted in 1909 to a working men's hotel as the Great Eastern Hotel, with a new central entrance. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
