Description View from NW showing N front of mill

Date 1970

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 767452

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Scottish Pulp & Paper Mills, Corpach, Fort William, Highland This shows the paper mill from the north-west. It is one of the largest factories in the West Highlands, and makes newsprint. The photograph was taken from the cab of a diesel locomotive on the West Highland Extension Railway. As a result of international competition the pulp mill closed in 1980, and with it the timber traffic ceased. The paper mill continues in operation, and a sawmill has been opened on the site of the pulp mill, with some rail traffic. This paper mill is part of what was originally an integrated paper pulp and paper mill, built in 1963-6 by Wiggins Teape & Co. The complex was designed to use timber from Highland forests, much of it moved by rail. The complex was built on the site of a World War II naval repair yard. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
