Scope and Content Ballantrae Bridge, South Ayrshire This shows the bridge form the north-east. Note the slender pier, and flat segmental arches, which give a relatively slight rise to the crown of the roadway. The cutwaters are, however triangular, and extended up to form pedestrian refuges, an early feature. At the time this bridge was built Portpatrick was the port for the short crossing of the Irish Sea, a link of growing importance when road transport was rapidly improving as a consequence of the construction of better roads. Ayrshire was at the forefront of this new development. This bridge was built in 1770 to carry the coast road from Girvan to Portpatrick across the River Stinchar. It was an advanced bridge for its time, and the largest engineering work on that section of the road. It was by-passed in the 1960s, and retained as a footbridge.
