Scope and Content Generator and switch gear, Kinlochmoidart House, Highland This shows the switch gear and generator for the electricity which was used in the house, especially for lighting and the servant bell system. The electricity was made from the power of water flowing from a reservoir to the east of the house. The development of electric lighting and other services run by electricity in the late 19th century led to many well-off families constructing their own private generator near their homes. The estate generating stations were often adapted for other purposes or left to fall into disrepair after electricity was distributed on the National Grid. Kinlochmoidart House was built in 1884 for Robert Stewart, distiller and stands on the site of an earlier house which was destroyed by fire in the mid-18th century. William Leiper (1839-1916), designed the house in Scots Baronial style and used local whinstone and red Ballochmyle sandstone in the construction. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
