Scope and Content Lift mechanism at third-floor level, Kinlochmoidart House, Highland This shows the mechanism, behind the balustrades, for the service lift which was used to transport heavy goods around the house. A servant would operate an electric control panel which was connected to this mechanism to move the lift between floors. The development of electric lighting and other services run by electricity in the late 19th century led to many well-off families constructing their own private generator near their homes. The Kinlochmoidart House generator created electricity from the power of water flowing from a reservoir on the estate. Kinlochmoidart House was built in 1884 for Robert Stewart, distiller and stands on the site of an earlier house which was destroyed by fire in the mid-18th century. William Leiper (1839-1916), designed the house in Scots Baronial style and used local whinstone and red Ballochmyle sandstone in the construction. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
