Scope and Content Gravestone of Robert Bine, Cardross Churchyard, Former Parish Church, Cardross, Argyll & Bute The emblems on this stone, although very worn, are recognisable. At the top of the stone is a winged soul wearing a periwig and with strange, flipper-like wings. This represents the spirit of the deceased ascending to Heaven after death. The panel below has a moulded border, containing a skull and crossed bones (emblems of death), and an hourglass (emblem of life's brevity). Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates Robert Bine, who died in 1726. It is inscribed: 'HERE LYES THE/CORPS OF ROBERT/BINE MILNER OF/BANAHRAN AGED/78 WHO DECEIST/2....1726'.
