Scope and Content Annotated and stamped on the mounted print: 'National Buildings Record Scottish Council. Shire: Ayrshire. Place: Maybole. Building: Culzean Castle - Stable block. Photographer: Cruft. Date March 1954'. Stables and clock-tower from south-west, Culzean Castle, South Ayrshire This shows the stable block, which was built 1777-87 to designs by Robert Adam. The main clock-tower has a castellated battlement with corner turrets, arched windows and central arch leading to the stable court within. The two flanking wings feature circular corner towers. A castellated wall and gate piers with pepperpot turrets enclose the block. In the centre of the court is a Portuguese bombard, a type of mortar used in siege warfare, which dates from 1716. The imposing faþade of the stable block is designed to complement the castellated style of the main building opposite. The stables housed both horses and carriages for use by the family. Guests would also leave their horses and coaches here to be cared for by a team of grooms and stableboys, who would sleep above the stables. Culzean Castle was remodelled by architect Robert Adam (1728-92) from 1777 onwards for David, 10th Earl of Cassilis. He extended the late 16th-century, L-plan tower-house in the Castellated style and added a drum tower in 1785. Adam also designed the Neo-Classical interior, oval staircase (built 1787), and adjacent home farm. The castle was extended to the west in 1875 by architects Wardrop & Reid, and restored in the 20th century for The National Trust for Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
