Scope and Content Reconstruction of amphitheatre, Yeavering, Northumberland This is a reconstruction of the theatre at Yeavering by Brian Hope-Taylor. Here we can see tiered seating and in front, a low stage. To either side and behind of this we can see a wattle fence. This is one of the most remarkable buildings constructed in post-Roman Britain. It is similar to a Roman amphitheatre. It has been interpreted has an assembly place. This can be taken as a clear example of Roman practices, institutions and ways of doing things being taken over and developed by the emerging kingdoms of the period. Yeavering was the site of an Anglo-Saxon royal palace associated with the kings of Northumbria. Excavations undertaken by Brian Hope-Taylor between 1953 and 1962 revealed the ground plans of an extraordinary array of timber buildings, which had lain undisturbed since the site was abandoned. The palace entered the historical record in the 7th century when it was mentioned by Bede, who referred to it as 'Ad Gefrin'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
