Scope and Content Round house built against rampart, Yeavering, Northumberland This is a view of one of round- houses under excavation. It was built against the inside face of the rampart and was surrounded by a substantial stone wall. More recently, aerial photography of the site has revealed that there are many more houses in the fort than Hope-Taylor was able to identify. In 2002, Yeavering Bell was left littered with holes after being robbed by illegal dealers in antiquities. Brian Hope-Taylor examined Yeavering Bell, Northumberland's largest hillfort, in 1959 while excavating the Anglo-Saxon palace that lay below. He discovered the remains of a number of round houses within the interior. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
