Scope and Content Entrance at Yeavering Bell, Yeavering, Northumberland This is a view of one of the three entrances to the hillfort of Yeavering Bell. The paved entrance passage can be seen flanked by the terminals of the single stone rampart that enclosed the site. The fort enclosed an area of about 14 acres and contains the remains of a number of round-houses. This site probably dates from the early Iron Age (800-500 BC) but may have been abandoned by the beginning of the Roman period. Brian Hope-Taylor examined Yeavering Bell, Northumberland's largest hillfort, in 1959 while excavating the Anglo-Saxon palace that lay below. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
