Scope and Content Amphitheatre area, Yeavering, Northumberland Aerial photographs of the site revealed a curious set of markings in the form of a series of concentric arcs of ditch. This view shows the trench that was laid out to examine the structure. The ditches are visible as dark marks between the two ranging poles. The excavator interpreted the structure as a grandstand. There are no parallels for the structure known in Britain, but Brian Hope-Taylor pointed to similarities with Roman theatres and amphitheatres. Yeavering was the site of an Anglo-Saxon royal palace associated with the kings of Northumbria. Excavations undertaken by Brian Hope-Taylor between 1953 and 1962 revealed the ground plans of an extraordinary array of timber buildings, which had lain undisturbed since the site was abandoned. The palace entered the historical record in the 7th century when it was mentioned by Bede, who referred to it as 'Ad Gefrin'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
