Scope and Content Pained overmantel in the library, Traquair House, Scottish Borders This shows a painting attributed to the artist Egbert van Heemskirk the Younger (1634-1704) entitled 'The Village School'. It its set into the richly decorated panelling of the library, which was decorated in the mid-18th century. This light-hearted scene of learning reflects the purpose of the room. The library has a decorated ceiling coving depicting busts of Classical authors executed in 'grisaille' (tones of grey). They were restored by Edinburgh artist James West in 1823, who also marbled the walls and fireplace, and grained the woodwork. The library contains a collection of 3,000 books. Traquair is the oldest continually inhabited house in Scotland, with its origins in the 10th century. It was the site of a royal hunting lodge in the 1200s, but the house as seen today is based around a c.1512 tower-house with many later additions. The flanking service wings were built in 1695 to designs by architect James Smith (c.1645-1731), who also designed the wrought-iron screens round the courtyard in 1698.
