Scope and Content Aerial view of Manderston House, Scottish Borders This aerial view shows the house with Ionic-columned portico marking the grand main entrance. On the roof are skylights to light the staircases and halls within the centre of the building. The buildings round the courtyard on the right contain the service wing, and the formal gardens with their clipped topiary hedges can be seen in the centre of the photograph. Servants' living and working quarters were kept separate from those of the family. The service block had its own entrance for deliveries concealed from those arriving at the main entrance. The basement contains the kitchens and staff dining rooms, and the servants would sleep in rooms in the attics. Manderston House as it appears today is mostly the result of an extensive remodelling of the 1790s house by its owner, Sir James Miller, in the early 1900s. He chose as his architect John Kinross (1855-1931), who created a Georgian-style mansion closely modelled on Lady Miller's childhood home of Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire, designed by Robert Adam.
