Scope and Content Archway from north, Drummond Castle, Perth & Kinross This Classical-style archway leading from the formal parterre to the kitchen garden dates from the 17th century. It is said to have originally been part of a church in The Strand in London. The arch features a grotesque mask and swags of flowers, and is surmounted by two white marble Classical-style busts. The impact of this archway is greatly enhanced by the dark mass of clipped hedge behind it which also serves to conceal the kitchen garden from the parterre. Box hedges line the paths around the garden which lead the visitor to a wide variety of statuary placed amongst the terraces in a style known as 'Italianate'. Drummond Castle was built c.1490, but the complex of buildings visible today consist of a gatehouse which was added in 1630-6 by architect John Mylne III (1611-67) and an L-plan mansion built for the 4th Earl of Perth in 1689. The mansion was extended in the 18th or early 19th century, and remodelled in Baronial style into its present form by architect G T Ewing in 1878 and 1900. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
