Scope and Content Red sandstone quarry, W G Patterson & Co, Knowehead Quarry, Dumfries & Galloway Knowehead Quarry was first established about 1890 at Locharbriggs, 3.2km north-east of Dumfries. The quarry produced high quality sandstone of varying shades of red with a unique black veining running through it. There is still an active quarry on the site. This shows Knowehead Quarry with two of its cranes, all except one of which were hand cranes. Knowehead enjoyed an economic boom between 1895 and 1910 but was closed down with the outbreak of World War I. It was reopened in 1935 when a brick works was established on the same site. Quarrying for building stone has played its part in the economic history of Dumfries and Galloway. Lower Nithsdale and Annandale were renowned for the excellent quality of their red sandstones, used in construction both at home and abroad. The Stewartry district produced grey granites.
