Scope and Content Crane at W G Patterson & Co, Knowehead Quarry, Dumfries & Galloway Knowehead Quarry began about 1890 at Locharbriggs, 3.2km north-east of Dumfries. It enjoyed an economic boom between 1895 and 1910 but was closed at the outbreak of World War I in 1914. The quarry was re-opened in 1935 to produce high quality red sandstone for construction. This shows one of the cranes used at the quarry which had both hand cranes, made by Butters Bros & Co, of Glasgow and also a former steam crane converted to run on electricity. One quarry is still active but production now centres on stone for repair work rather than the construction of new buildings. When the quarry was reopened in 1935, Ballochmyle Brick Works was also established on the site. It made sand/lime bricks using ten parts waste sandstone dust from the adjoining quarry mixed with one part lime brought in from the Lake District. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
