Scope and Content Lade and sluice-gate from mill pond, New Abbey Mill, Dumfries & Galloway New Abbey Mill was built in the late 18th century, but stands on the site of a much older monastic mill. The three-storeyed, stone rubble building contains the miller's house, milling area powered by a pitch-back waterwheel, and a drying kiln topped by a circular ventilator with fish-shaped wind vane. The mill was restored to working order in 1982. This shows the stone-lined lade which runs from the mill pond to the whitewashed mill building (centre background). Part of the lade runs underground below the road. A sluice-gate (left) controls the flow of water into the lade. Water is carried to the wheel along a wooden trough from the lade. The trough has a trapdoor in its floor which controls the flow. The mill's water supply is held in a mill pond, and is drawn from Loch Kindar (over 1.5km away) along a burn called the Sheep Burn.
