Scope and Content Entrance gateway and lodge, Gartnavel Royal Hospital, No 1055 Great Western Road, Glasgow The foundation stone of Gartnavel Royal Hospital was laid on 1 June 1842. Designed by Charles Wilson (1810-63), this imposing, Tudor-style institution was built to replace Glasgow's first Royal Asylum for Lunatics in Parliamentary Road, deemed too small to meet the needs of this rapidly expanding city. This shows the impressive entrance gateway to the hospital with a gate lodge designed by Sir John James Burnet (1857-1938) and built in 1898-9. Wilson's original design for the hospital consisted of two buildings linked by a chapel but the chapel, also designed by Burnet, was not built until 1904. The hospital has expanded well beyond its original capacity of 420 patients. By 1847 this figure had already risen to 600. In 1877 a major programme of construction was undertaken which included a new dining hall, recreation hall, a separate dining room for private patients and a general bathroom.
