Scope and Content The Ship Inn, North Ness, Hoy, Orkney Islands The Ship Inn, an early 19th-century inn, occupies a prominent waterfront site at North Ness, a secluded harbour on the south-east coast of the island of Hoy, the second largest island in the Orkney archipelago. This photograph of the inn was taken c.1890 by Erskine Beveridge. This simple, two-storeyed, rectangular-plan house, is harled and painted. It has a three-bayed main block with a symmetrical arrangement, and a small single-storeyed section, probably a later addition, at the north end (right). Both have prominent crowstepped gables and slated roofs. The name above the door of the main house is 'J Linklater'. The Ship Inn, described as 'the most southerly house in the district of North Ness', was originally the property of I G Moodie of Melsetter, and was still in use as an inn in the early 20th century. The small single-storeyed section was built as a post office. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
