Scope and Content Tun room block and still house from east, North British Distillery, Wheatfield Road, Edinburgh The North British Distillery was established by a group of independent whisky blenders in 1885 to produce a reliable supply of grain whisky for their blends. Production began in 1887, and the first Saladin maltings in Scotland were installed here in 1948. The site was renovated in 1992, and continues to create whisky for many famous blends. This modern tun room building is constructed from concrete panels arranged to form a chequered pattern across the walls. Some of the panels have been replaced by small square windows, but the principal features are the band of windows near the top, and an external stair tower (left). On the right is part of the still house. The tun room is used for mashing together grains or barley with hot water to extract the sugars in large vats called mash tuns. The still house contains stills to heat the wash from the fermentation stage until the alcohol rises as vapour and can be condensed into spirit. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
