Scope and Content Main production block from north-east, Jura Distillery, Jura, Argyll & Bute Jura Distillery was established in 1810, and was reconstructed in 1875 (by James Ferguson & Sons), 1884, and most recently in 1960-3 by the Jura Distillery Co Ltd with William Delmé Evans as architect, in an attempt to boost the island's prosperity. In 1978 the number of stills was increased from two to four. It is now owned by the Scottish company Kyndal Spirits Ltd. This shows the main production block with its cluster of whitewashed buildings, large painted sign and boiler house chimney (left). This is the only legal distillery on this tiny, isolated island, but illicit distilling may have been a part of life here since the 1600s. The large stills installed in 1978 were taller than most, creating a light malt with a less pungent aroma than those produced on nearby Islay. Water for whisky production comes from Market Loch, which was dammed in 1978, the materials for construction being delivered to the site by helicopter. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
