Scope and Content Maltings block from east, Springbank Distillery, Glebe Street, Campbeltown, Argyll & Bute Springbank Distillery was legally established in 1828 by the Mitchell family, and remains the property of the descendants of the original owners. It was closed 1926-35 due to a depression in the whisky trade, but upon re-opening it has continued to operate, with staff cutting peat (until recently), malting barley, distilling and bottling the end product on the premises. This shows the former maltings (now used as a grain store) in the foreground, and the current floor maltings block. Within the stone rubble walls barley is allowed to germinate after being soaked in the malt steeps. Once the barley has sprouted, the process is halted by drying the grains over a peated fire in the malt kiln. The malted barley is then ground into grist in the malt mill, before being mixed with hot water in the mash tun. This extracts the sugars which are fermented with yeast in the washbacks, creating an alcoholic liquid called wash which is ready for distillation and condensation into whisky.
