Scope and Content Malt dressing machine in the mill house, Rosebank Distillery, Camelon Road, Falkirk Rosebank Distillery was founded c.1817 and restored and converted in the 1840s by James Rankine. His son, R W Rankine rebuilt the distillery in 1864, with ownership passing to the Rosebank Distillery Ltd in 1894. The maltings were demolished c.1970, and the site mothballed in 1993. This shows a malt dressing machine made by Porteus of Leeds. Barley is soaked in water and allowed to germinate (sprout), then it is dried in the malt kiln. The rootlets are cleaned off in this wooden-cased machine before it is ground into grist in the malt mill. The grist is mixed with hot water in the mash tun to extract the sugars in a solution known as 'wort'. This is cooled and yeast is added to ferment it in the washbacks. The wash is then distilled into spirit in the pot stills before maturation in oak casks to take on flavour and colour. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
