Scope and Content Stills in the still room, Rosebank Distillery, Camelon Road, Falkirk Rosebank Distillery was founded c.1817 and restored and converted in the 1840s by James Rankine. His son, R W Rankine rebuilt the distillery in 1864, with ownership passing to the Rosebank Distillery Ltd in 1894. The maltings were demolished c.1970, and the site mothballed in 1993. This shows three copper pot stills installed in 1962 by R & G Abercrombie of Alloa. The stills use stream to heat the wash from fermentation until the alcohol rises up the still as vapour. It passes over the 'lyne arm' (horizontal pipe on top of each still) and piped outside to the worm tubs (condensers). Most Scottish distilleries practise double distillation. The wash still creates an impure product called 'low wines', which passes through the spirit safe to be distilled once more in the spirit still. Each distillery attributes part of the flavour of the finished whisky to the unique shape of their own stills and the circumstances of the spirit's maturation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
