Scope and Content Threshing barn, Westbrough Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from north This unusual steading was owned by Orkney's most famous land improver, the Duke of Balfour, who also owned Warsetter and Stove on Sanday. While the buildings have been much altered and added to, most date back to the 19th century and the older farmhouse is probably of 18th-century origin. This is the threshing barn from the north showing the flagstone roof. There are also flagstones, where visible, on the floor. The lean-to extension was built in two stages on the site of a horse engine and were used to house animals, the north end being used as a sheep shed. The ground floor of the barn houses the iron grain bruiser mounted on a concrete plinth next to the west wall and in line with the engine house. The bruiser is fed from a floor hopper above it.
