Scope and Content Original farmhouse, Westbrough Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from north-west This unusual steading was owned by Orkney's most famous land improver, the Duke of Balfour, who also owned Warsetter and Stove on Sanday. While the buildings have been much altered and added to, most date back to the 19th century and the older farmhouse is probably of 18th-century origin. This is a rear view of the older farmhouse as seen from the north-west. The house is one-and-a-half-storeyed and has a graduated flagstone roof. It is now used as a workshop and storage space. It is joined to the newer farmhouse by a flat-roofed single-storeyed range. On Sanday only this house and some of the buildings at Savil and Quivals are likely to date from the 18th century. Here, the wall thickness above the former first floor is reduced and the doors in the east wall now open into the cattle shed. In front of the house, to the left, is a modern milking machine pump room built of cement blocks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
