Scope and Content Farmhouses, Westbrough Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south-east This unusual steading was owned by Orkney's most famous land improver, the Duke of Balfour, who also owned Warsetter and Stove on Sanday. While the buildings have been much altered and added to, most date back to the 19th century and the older farmhouse is probably of 18th-century origin. This shows both farmhouses from the south-east with the later house in the foreground. This two-storeyed, L-plan house has cement-rendered walls, a slate roof and a corner porch. The earlier house is one-and-a-half-storeyed with rubble masonry walls and crowstepped gables. Lord Balfour was one of four major landowners on Sanday, the others being: Malcolm Laing who, prior to 1834, owned Stove; the Earl of Zetland who owned Backaskaill; and Thomas Traill of Westove who owned Scar. Lord Balfour also owned farms on other islands plus the whole of Shapinsay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
