Scope and Content Turnip shed, Seater Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands Seater is a disused 19th-century steading whose land is now part of the neighbouring farm of Newark. It was last used in the 1960s. All the buildings are of rubble masonry, the large detached threshing barn being of special note. This shows a detail of the double door and flagstone roof of the turnip shed. The graded flagstones on the roof are nailed to A-framed couples and the inside wall faces extend up to the roof. In his report to the Highlands & Agricultural Society of Scotland, Pringle stated, 'It is doubtful indeed whether (over the previous 25 years) any part of the United Kingdom has been improved in so remarkable a manner as Orkney.' The expansion in farming necessitated new farm buildings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
