Scope and Content Bradley & Craven auger and extractor, Anniston Brick & Tile Works, Angus Anniston Works was founded on its original site in the mid-19th century and closed in the late 1960s. The company made roof, floor and drain tiles as well as flower pots and extruded bricks. The raw material used was clay extracted from open-cast clay pits beside the works using a multi-bucket excavator. This shows an auger and extruder made by Bradley & Craven. The auger consisted of a screw-shaped drive which rotated inside a column, lifting the clay and conveying it to a chamber where it was compressed before being extruded as a long rectangle of clay which could then be wire-cut to form bricks. Brickmaking was largely done by hand until the 19th century when the industry became more mechanised with some 109 brickmaking machines and kilns being patented between 1820 and 1850. Mechanisation continued throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, improving quality and increasing output. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
