Scope and Content Cart shed, carriage house and stables, Scar Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from west Scar is a coastal farm on Sanday, an island in the Orkney group. Scar has an extensive complex of farm buildings, constructed to meet the needs of this type of large, commercially productive farm. Such farms came into being when agricultural improvement revolutionised the old methods of subsistence farming in the 19th century. This shows the stone-built carriage house with its arched door and loft above. The stable, containing three stalls, was in the same building, separated by a wooden partition. To the right is the cart shed which originally had three arched openings. The centre arch has been removed and a concrete lintel fitted. Agricultural improvement in Scotland began in the second half of the 18th century but took half a century to reach Orkney. James Scarth, factor for several estates, lived at Scar during the second half of the 19th century. He embraced the new methods of farming and invested in modern farm machinery.
