Scope and Content Former grieve's house from north, Scar Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands Scar is a coastal farm on the island of Sanday which is part of the Orkney group. Sanday is low-lying and almost treeless with only a few low hills to protect it from the wind. Its fertile soils and favourable climate are good for growing crops, like grain, and rearing livestock. This shows the former grieve's house. It is a single-storeyed stone building with roofs of slate and flagstone and comprises two dwellings and what was a blacksmith's workshop at one time. The east half of the building was renovated in the 1990s for the use of the farmer and his family. The farm grieve was an overseer in charge of the day to day running of the farm and its labourers. The size of this house demonstrates his high standing in the hierarchy of farm servants. The job of the grieve became necessary with the advent of large, commercially productive farms in the 18th and 19th centuries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
