Scope and Content Pig houses from east, Scar Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands Scar is a coastal farm on the island of Sanday, part of the Orkney group. Sanday's fertile soils and temperate climate are favourable for an agricultural economy which includes both the cultivation of crops and the production and rearing of livestock. This shows the pigsties which were built in the middle of the U-shaped complex of farm buildings. The pigsties were low, and built of stone with flagstone roofs. Originally two separate buildings with an open space between, this space was roofed over with corrugated sheet metal. Walls and a door were then added. Livestock at Scar included hens, geese, ducks, pigs, and cattle. Horses pulled farm machinery and were used for transport. In 1836 a steamer service was established with mainland Scotland which shipped cattle south for fattening. Between 1857 and 1871 cattle numbers in Orkney rose from 14,887 to 22,830.
