Scope and Content Poultry houses from east, Scar Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands Scar is a coastal farm on the island of Sanday which is part of the Orkney group. Sanday is low-lying and almost treeless with only a few low hills to protect it from the wind. Its fertile soils are derived from flagstones of the Old Red Sandstone age. This shows the poultry houses which were single-storeyed stone buildings. One side was higher than the other with a single sloping flagstone roof. The two poultry houses faced in opposite directions. The central section faced north-west and the side sections south-east. By 1966 they were being used as sheep shelters. Poultry and egg production have made a significant contribution to Orkney's agricultural economy, especially in the 20th century, when intensive production was introduced. Prior to the mid-19th century, geese were commonly reared in Orkney. It is known that hens, geese and ducks were kept at Scar. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
