Scope and Content West Stand and north terracing from south-east, Heart of Midlothian Football Club, Tynecastle Park Stadium, Gorgie Road, Edinburgh Tynecastle Park is the home ground of Heart of Midlothian (Hearts) Football Club, founded in 1884. By 1886 it had settled on its present site which it bought in 1926. 56,496 fans crammed into the ground to watch a cup tie in 1932 but Tynecastle is now an all-seater stadium and capacity has dropped to 18,000. This shows the West Stand, demolished since this photograph was taken, and replaced by the new Wheatfield Stand, the first of the new stands to open in 1994. The pitch had to be moved 6m to accommodate it. The north terracing was also removed and substituted by the new Roseburn Stand at the school end of the pitch. Following the deaths of 96 Liverpool football fans at Hillsborough, Sheffield, in 1989, the recommendations of the Taylor Report revolutionised the design of traditional British stadiums. Despite the constraints of its crowded urban site, Hearts decided to remain at Tynecastle, rebuilding it to meet new safety standards. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
