Scope and Content Main production block from south-east, Glengarioch Distillery, Distillery Road, Old Meldrum, Aberdeenshire Glengarioch Distillery was established in 1797 by Ingram, Lamb & Co. It changed hands several times before closing in 1968. It re-opened in 1970 after being purchased by Stanley P Morrison, and the number of stills was increased from two to three in 1973. After being mothballed in 1995 it re-opened in 1997. This shows, from left to right, the pagoda vents above the malt kilns, where malt was dried over peat fires, and the tun room and mash house, with their ornate gables and oculus (circular) windows where mashing and fermentation takes place. This distillery once used the heat and carbon dioxide produced during distillation to warm greenhouses for growing tomatoes and flowers in plastic nutrition bags containing soil and fertilizer. Most distilleries sell their waste products from brewing and distilling for cattle feed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
