Scope and Content Threshing barn, Backaskaill Steading, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from west The 400-acre farm of Backaskaill on the Orkney island of Sanday was owned by the Earl of Zetland from at least 1793. In 1863 the then earl erected new buildings for his tenants as well as draining the land. In 1874 it was occupied by John Paul and described as 'a first rate farm'. This shows the threshing barn from the west. This two-storeyed range has rubble masonry walls and a slated roof. The building also housed the granary and the straw barn, both at the west end. The threshing machine and sheaf loft were towards the east end (right). The threshing machine, last updated in 1949 by Scarths of Kirkwall, was used until 1979 and dismantled in 1985 except for the main frame which formed part of a grain storage bin for locally grown barley used as winter feed. When last used it was powered by a stationary diesel engine on the ground floor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
