Scope and Content Farmhouse, Backaskaill Steading, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from east The 400-acre farm of Backaskaill on the Orkney island of Sanday was owned by the Earl of Zetland from at least 1793. In 1863 the then earl erected new buildings for his tenants as well as draining the land. In 1874 it was occupied by John Paul and described as 'a first rate farm'. This shows the farmhouse from the east. The house is a three-bayed, two-storeyed, rubble-built structure with a grey slate roof. On the south end (left) is a single-storeyed section which was built before the main house and served as the servants' quarters and later the kitchen once the two-storeyed house was built. The house was originally built for the minister, John Paul, who later emigrated to Canada. The garden walls are of rubble masonry with modern cement blocks added on top. The Earl of Zetland was the only landowner on Sanday to provide buildings for his tenants. The others stipulated that the tenants must build their own. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
