Scope and Content Courtyard and Byre, Backaskaill Steading, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from north-east The 400-acre farm of Backaskaill on the Orkney island of Sanday was owned by the Earl of Zetland from at least 1793. In 1863 the then earl erected new buildings for his tenants as well as draining the land. In 1874 it was occupied by John Paul and described as 'a first rate farm'. This is the courtyard and byre seen from the north-east, with part of the gable end of the grieve's house to the left and the implement shed attached to the byre to the right. This was built after 1972 and has a single-pitched corrugated sheet metal roof. Visible through the entrance to the courtyard is part of the open-air cattle court and feeding trough. Sanday comes from Old Norse and means 'sandy island'. It is about 20km long and 11km wide, with its highest point, The Wart, being only 65m above sea level. The underlying geology of the flat eastern part of the island is Rousay flagstone and that of the slightly hilly western part is Eday sandstone. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
