Scope and Content Backaskaill Steading, Sanday, Orkney Islands The 400-acre farm of Backaskaill on the island of Sanday was owned by the Earl of Zetland from at least 1793. In 1863 the then earl erected new buildings for his tenants as well as draining the land. In 1874 it was occupied by John Paul and described as 'a first rate farm'. This shows the rear elevation of the house and steading from the north-west. The main two-storeyed part of the house was built in 1863 while the single-storeyed part of the house and the turnip house are said to have been built before 1860. The main body of the steading was built about 1860. In his report to the Highlands and Agricultural Society of Scotland, Pringle stated: 'It is doubtful indeed whether (over the previous 25 years) any part of the United Kingdom has been improved in so remarkable a manner as Orkney'. The expansion in farming necessitated new farm buildings being erected across the islands. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
