Scope and Content Farmhouse, Inverbrora Steading, Highland Inverbrora Steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. By 1829, 36 lowland mixed farms had been created mostly along the coastal strip between Bonar Bridge and Helmsdale. Inverbrora was one of these estate 'improvements' and dates from 1820. This is the farmhouse viewed from the south-east. Dated 1821, this symmetrical H-plan house has a ground and attic floor and is three bays wide. The central bay is slightly recessed with a corniced entrance, double-leaf door, lattice-pane fanlight and datestone with the Sutherland and Stafford arms on it. The house is built of coursed, dressed rubble with painted, tooled ashlar margins. This elegant cottage-style farmhouse was designed by George Alexander. According to the original plan, the room on the ground floor to the left of the door was intended as the parlour, the room to the left as the family room. The rooms above are described as garret bedrooms. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
