Scope and Content Main production block from east, Benrinnes Distillery, Moray Benrinnes Distillery was established in 1826, only to be washed away in the great floods of 1829. It was rebuilt in 1835 by William Smith & Co. It was rebuilt again in 1955, Saladin Maltings were installed in 1964, and the number of stills was increased from three to six in 1966. The whisky produced is used as part of Crawford's blended Scotch, and also released as a single malt. The main block of the distillery contains, from left to right, the boiler house chimney, the still house, the mash house with its draff outlet pipe for loading wagons and the malt bins. The building is harled and painted cream, and features a projecting entrance porch and two further blocks with gables at the wall-head (right). Saladin boxes, invented in the 19th century in France, are concrete troughs with ventilated floor panels. Barley is poured into the box to a depth of 1.21m and mechanically turned by rows of Archimedes screws whilst air is blown through from below. This ensures the barley is evenly germinated before it is dried in the malt kiln. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
