Scope and Content Still house and draff outlet from north, Benrinnes Distillery, Moray Benrinnes Distillery was established in 1826, only to be washed away in the great floods of 1829. It was rebuilt in 1835 by William Smith & Co. It was rebuilt again in 1955, Saladin Maltings were installed in 1964, and the number of stills was increased from three to six in 1966. The whisky produced is used as part of Crawford's blended Scotch, and also released as a single malt. This shows the Art Deco-style façade of the still house, with its pale, stepped harled walls and datestone inscribed '1956', (the date of the distillery's rebuilding). The boiler house chimney towers above the lower buildings, and an outlet pipe (right) for loading wagons with draff can also be seen. Draff is the residue from the fermentation processes carried out in the initial stages of whisky production. It is sold off for use as animal feed. The by-products of the malting and brewing processes have always been used in this way, ensuring that no parts of the harvest are wasted. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
