Scope and Content Main production block from south, Benrinnes Distillery, Moray Benrinnes Distillery was established in 1826, only to be washed away in the great floods of 1829. It was rebuilt again in 1835 by William Smith & Co. It was rebuilt in 1955, Saladin Maltings were installed in 1964, and the number of stills was increased from three to six in 1966. The whisky produced is used as part of Crawford's blended Scotch, and also released as a single malt. This shows the boiler house chimney and boiler house (left). On the right are the cast iron worm tanks which condense the alcoholic vapour produced in the stills (located in the adjacent building far right). Most of the structures making up the distillery are between one and two storeys high and have harled walls and sky-lit roofs. Worm-tub condensers are metal tanks containing cold water and coiled copper tubes known as worms. The water used at the distillery comes from Ben Rinnes, a 840m-high mountain which overlooks the site. Water flows down as snow-melt in the Scurran and Rowantree Burns.
