Description Benrinnes Distillery Still House (item 7 on plan): elevated interior view from north, showing six copper pot stills, all of which are heated by steam coils. The two larger stills in the centre are Wash Stills. This distillery has a triple distillation process, which explains the presence of two low wines stills on either side of the Wash Stills. Scope and Content Still house from south-east, Benrinnes Distillery, Moray Benrinnes Distillery was established in 1826, only to be washed away in the great floods on 1829. It was rebuilt in 1835 by William Smith & Co. It was rebuilt in 1955, Saladin Maltings were installed in 1964, and the number of stills was increased from three to six in 1966. The whisky produced is used as part of Crawford's blended Scotch, and also released as a single malt. This shows the steam-heated stills in the still house. These consist of two sets of three copper stills, which carry out a triple distillation. The stills are placed on a raised brick platform with metal grille floor panels. The lyne arms from the top of each pot still pass through the wall taking alcoholic vapour to the worm tub condensers outside. Triple distilling is unusual in Scottish distilleries, being more usually associated with the production of Irish whisky. The process creates a stronger spirit (76% volume) with a lighter colour and less 'body' than traditional double distilling. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
