Scope and Content Still house from south-east, Benrinnes Distillery, Moray Benrinnes Distillery was established in 1826, only to be washed away in the great floods of 1829. It was rebuilt in 1835 by William Smith & Co. It was rebuilt again in 1955, Saladin Maltings were installed in 1964, and the number of stills was increased from three to six in 1966. The whisky produced is used as part of Crawford's blended Scotch, and also released as a single malt. This shows the three steam-heated stills at the south of the building which are used to triple distil the wash from the fermentation process. Another set are situated close by. Alcoholic vapour passes over the lyne arms at the top of each still to the worm tub condensers outside. Triple distilling is unusual in Scottish distilleries, being more usually associated with the production of Irish whiskey. The process creates a stronger spirit (76% volume) with a lighter colour and less 'body' than traditional double distilling. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
