Scope and Content Steeping tanks in the maltings, Benrinnes Distillery, Moray Benrinnes Distillery was established in 1826, only to be washed away in the great floods of 1829. It was rebuilt in 1835 by William Smith & Co. It was rebuilt again in 1955, Saladin Maltings were installed in 1964, and the number of stills was increased from three to six in 1966. The whisky produced is used as part of Crawford's blended Scotch, and also released as a single malt. This shows the two conical steel tanks which are used for steeping (soaking) barley to stimulate it to germinate (shoot). The water used at the distillery comes from Ben Rinnes, a 840m-high mountain which overlooks the site. Water flows down as snow-melt in the Scurran and Rowantree Burns. Once the barley has been steeped, it is transferred to the Saladin boxes to germinate. These are concrete tanks incorporating a mechanical turning machine. Once dried in a kiln the malt is mixed with water and fermented. The wash from this stage is then distilled into whisky before maturation in casks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
