Scope and Content Mash tun and grist hopper in mash house, Benrinnes Distillery, Moray Benrinnes Distillery was established in 1826, only to be washed away in the great floods of 1829. It was rebuilt in 1835 by William Smith & Co. It was rebuilt again in 1955, Saladin Maltings were installed in 1964, and the number of stills was increased from three to six in 1966. The whisky produced is used as part of Crawford's blended Scotch, and also released as a single malt. This shows a new stainless steel mash tun with its inspection doors open. Behind it can be seen the grist hopper which stores and delivers grist (ground malted barley) into the mash tun where it is mixed with hot water. The mash house has a high corrugated metal roof supported on a metal framework. The malt is drawn out of the worts (malt sugars), which are then cooled and yeast added to ferment the mixture further. This liquid, called wash, is then distilled from low wines (once-distilled spirit) to unmatured whisky in pear-shaped copper vessels before maturation in wooden casks for at least three years.
