Scope and Content Customs Duty Free Warehouse (Bond No 37), Nos 42-45 Water Street, Leith, Edinburgh The block of buildings between Maritime Street (formerly Quality Street) and Water Street was developed in the late 19th century to provide warehouses and offices for firms engaged in the wine and spirit trades. This is one of two large bonded warehouses in Water Street, and is in two sections. This shows the northern section (Nos 42, 43) of the warehouse from the south west Like the southern section it is well-built of snecked sandstone rubble, a style of building favoured in the late 19th century. The building in the distance is Lamb's House, a 17th century merchant's house and warehouse. This warehouse backs on to premises in Maritime Street which belonged in the 1930s to Macdonald Greenlees and other Scotch whisky firms, and may have been owned and operated by them. It was converted into flats in the 1990s as part of the regeneration of Leith. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
