Scope and Content Leith Custom House, Commercial Street, Edinburgh The first part of this large custom house was designed by Robert Reid and built in 1810-12. William Burn was responsible for adding the pavilions on either side, the stairways flanking the main doorway and single-storey links to the stable block at the rear. This shows the building from the south-west, with one of William Burn's pavilions and single-storey links in the foreground. The severe classical architectural treatment is typical of custom houses of the period, symbols of impartial government, Dock Place, leading to the East Old Dock, is on the left. The scale of this building is indicative of the importance of Leith as a port. Its construction coincided with the start of work on Leith's second enclosed dock, completed in 1817. The only larger custom house in Scotland is that in Greenock. The Leith house has been without a worthy use for many years. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
